Callum and Jennifer Macleod have kindly opened their door to us. Thanks to their friend Sandy who is very knowledgeable about the history of the island. We spend a first afternoon with Jennifer and Callum, drinking tea and eating biscuits. It's raining and windy outside which reinforces the cosiness we feel in their living-room. They both love their prefab, bought it and added a conservatory at the back. Callum was a seaman, he sailed all over the world and finally retired in Plasterfield where he comes from. He grew up in the prefab. Jennifer is from Fife on the mainland but loves her little house, 'especially this room', she says, 'I can keep an eye on everything what's going on on the street, who comes in the estate, who leaves with whom...'
The second afternoon we spend with them, Sandy is also around. He hasn't seen his childhood friend, 'Calla', for months and is very talkative... They both recall the past, the post-war years when they were kids and both in the same class. All the naughty things they did... I just put the camera on the tripod and filmed them. Sandy explained how he liked to come from Stornoway to see Calla and spend time in the prefab. 'I really loved that little house, it was so different from mine and the other traditional homes in town'.
